An ideal concentration of magnesium is required for the growth of marine invertebrates and algae. A perfect example is calcareous red algae. These consume large amounts of magnesium to build their skeletal structure. Natural seawater contains about 1300 mg/l. If we want to achieve ideal conditions in a marine aquarium, this concentration must be considered. You can quickly and easily determine the magnesium concentration in a marine aquarium using the Sera Magnesium Test. The magnesium concentration can be easily increased in a marine aquarium using Sera Magnesium Plus.
The magnesium level can be increased using Sera Marin COMPONENT 6 Magnesium. The consumption of the reagent depends on the calcium level in the water being tested.

Usage information A marine aquarium requires an optimal level of magnesium for invertebrates and decorative algae to grow well. Red calcareous algae are a perfect example. These decorative algae require large amounts of magnesium, as they incorporate this element into their skeletal structure. Natural seawater contains about 1300 mg/l. This level should also be maintained in the ideal marine aquarium. The Sera magnesium test allows you to monitor the magnesium level in your aquarium quickly and easily. It will be easier if you have gained experience in testing using the Sera calcium test. You can easily increase the magnesium level in your marine aquarium by adding Sera Marin COMPONENT 6 Magnesium. Usage instructions: Shake the reagent bottles well before use! Do not allow the tested water to come into contact with aquarium or pond water!
1. Rinse the measuring bottle several times with the water to be tested, then empty the bottle. Dry the outside of the bottle.
2. Rinse the syringe several times with the water to be tested, then fill 2 ml of it into the bottle using the syringe.
3. Add 6 drops of reagent 1 and shake the bottle until the liquid is evenly distributed. Potential cloudiness does not affect the test.
4. Add a level measuring spoon (included with the kit) of reagent 2 to the bottle and gently shake the bottle (do not shake vigorously) until the powder dissolves.
5. Add reagent 3 drop by drop while counting the drops, releasing the pressure on the reagent bottle after every 5 drops to allow air to enter the bottle. Shake the bottle after each drop until the color changes from pink to blue (not purple) and remains stable for at least 30 seconds while occasionally shaking the bottle. Record the number of drops used.
6. Empty the measuring bottle, rinse it carefully with tap water, then several times with the water to be tested, and then empty the bottle. Dry the outside of the bottle.
7. Draw 2 ml of the water to be tested into the syringe and fill it into the bottle.
8. Add 6 drops of reagent 4 and shake the bottle until the liquid is evenly distributed. Potential cloudiness does not affect the test.
9. Add a level measuring spoon (included with the kit) of reagent 5 to the bottle and gently shake the bottle (do not shake vigorously) until the powder dissolves.
10. Add reagent 3 drop by drop while counting the drops, releasing the pressure on the reagent bottle after every 5 drops to allow air to enter the bottle. Shake the bottle after each drop until the color changes from red to green and remains stable for at least 30 seconds while occasionally shaking the bottle. Note - You will need significantly more drops for this measurement compared to the first measurement!
11. Subtract the number of drops required for the first measurement from the result of the second measurement. Multiply the remaining number of drops by 60 to obtain the magnesium level in mg/l. Example: The first measurement required 4 drops, and the second measurement 24 drops. If you subtract the result of the first measurement from the second, 20 drops remain. 20 drops multiplied by 60 gives 1200 mg/l magnesium.
12. Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the bottle and syringe with tap water before and after each test. Close the reagent bottles immediately after use and do not switch caps. Store at room temperature and away from light. For testing in ornamental fish tanks and pond water only.
