Not everyone knows that the tank substrate has a significant impact on the living conditions in the specific tank. Many beginner hobbyists believe that the substrate only changes the visual appearance, while in reality, the substrate greatly affects the biochemical balance and living conditions of the fauna and flora. It is true that most substrates are completely neutral towards water, do not add any contaminants or minerals to it, and thus do not change its properties in any way. However, not all substrates are like this.

Some tank substrates, due to their porous structure, can be, among other things, an excellent habitat for safe bacteria that support the development of fauna and flora in the specific tank. While others, due to their high calcium content, can change the water's pH and cause a very negative effect on some fish species, posing a deadly threat to them. Some other substrates act as filters, but as a result, they can release elements into the water that are not recommended for fish. Therefore, when choosing a fish tank substrate, make sure to understand the characteristics of the fish and plants inside the tank and their requirements regarding water pH.
Remember that regardless of the type of fish or plants, marine sand and stones containing even small amounts of minerals should not be used in tanks. Both options pose a deadly threat to fish, which are very sensitive to water quality and the toxic compounds present in it. Stores with questionable reputations may also have unnatural and dyed substrates. In their case, the threats are greater.
The dolomite substrate is completely natural and enjoys great interest from buyers. However, it cannot be used everywhere. Dolomite contains a very high amount of calcium, which completely changes the water's properties and characteristics. Therefore, it will only be used in some tanks with selected fish species that require alkaline and hard water to thrive. It cannot be used in planted tanks. On the other hand, it is ideal for species from Lake Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria, among others. In such tanks, this substrate stabilizes water parameters and improves its biological properties.
