Fleas:
Dogs and other warm-blooded animals are particularly susceptible to flea infestations in warm climates or during summer months when air temperatures and humidity levels are high. Dogs can catch fleas from their furry friends or the surrounding environment. Fleas use their powerful hind legs to jump onto the "host" (your dog) and then bite the animal. These bites can cause itching, hair loss, hot spots from scratching, inflamed sores, and even skin infections. You may also notice small dirt-like particles on your pet - which are actually flea droppings and digested blood.
Female fleas can live for several weeks on your pet and may lay between 20-30 eggs daily during that period. Some eggs will hatch into larvae on your pet, while others fall into your home environment - where they feed on skin flakes and other organic matter. Pet owners should treat both the dog and the indoor and outdoor environment of the home. We recommend using Woof Wash™ Shampoo for Flea and Tick Control in conjunction with Richard's Organic Flea Treatment - made with 100% natural boric acid.
Ticks:
Ticks are aquatic arthropods that attach and feed on warm hosts, such as your dog. Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, tall grass, and vegetation. Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors are at risk of encountering ticks at any time. When this happens, ticks can attach and lock their mouthparts into a crevice or fold and begin feeding on blood - sometimes for several days. In addition to being annoying, ticks pose a significant concern for both animals and humans due to the high risk of transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, or babesiosis. A tick bite can also cause anemia, joint swelling, fever, and paralysis. If your pet shows any signs of illness and you suspect they have been bitten by a tick, consult your veterinarian immediately. Always check your pet for ticks if they have been outdoors, especially in wooded areas.
Tips for Bathing Your Pet at Home Like a Pro:
- Before bathing, build trust. Let your pet see and sniff grooming tools, brushes, towels, and the shampoo bottle, and let them hear the sound of running water.
- Praise your pet and reward them with love and treats for their calm behavior. Build a positive association with bathing for your pet.
- If your pet shows signs of severe stress and anxiety, we recommend using an all-natural calming treatment, Richard's Organic Calm, to help them relax before bathing. It takes only 10-15 minutes to see results.
- Before washing, carefully brush your pet's hair to remove all tangles and matted areas. If they have severely matted fur, carefully remove it using scissors. Also, check for ticks, fleas, burrs, hot spots, or any other irregularities.
- Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet and dirty.
- Close the bathroom door so your pet doesn't escape and run around your home wet and soapy!
- Use a spray nozzle if you have one - it makes rinsing the fur much easier.
- Use specially formulated and pH-balanced Woof Wash™ products designed specifically for pets. And don't forget the conditioner! It's an important part of rebuilding and maintaining moisture and shine in your pet's coat.
- Gently dry your pet using a towel or a professional pet dryer on a low setting.
- Enjoy, play, and cuddle with your clean and happy pet!
