SUBSTRATpro is made from dried quartz sand in the form of balls. The spherical shape allows for high volume density. This means the volume in the filter (filter baskets or units) can be fully utilized. Additionally, the improved surface of the balls ensures intensive stability of the bacteria important for cleaning. A dense bacterial lawn is formed.
The large number of bacteria also reduces nitrite load peaks and extends the filter material's lifespan.

Biological Filter Media
The main task of biological filter media is to provide the best conditions for bacterial cultures to grow, so that a bacterial lawn develops shortly after. The bacteria feed on all kinds of dirt particles and transform substances that are vital for the aquarium.
After initial cleaning with mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration is the most important. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable water values. That is why we have invested a lot of research in developing biological filter media.
Tip:
Do not clean or replace the biological filter media completely at once (nor too deeply). The bacterial cultures should not be completely destroyed, otherwise recolonization will be delayed. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter units in internal filters Aquaball and Biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.
