Filtration and breakdown processes at the bottom of natural waters are very important. Organic waste is processed by microorganisms and thus made available to the natural cycle as a nutrient for aquatic plants – where pollutants such as ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate are removed. Since a small amount of waste is produced per volume of water in nature, the surface at the bottom is sufficient to accommodate a sufficient number of microorganisms.
