The Exo Terra desert sand substrate mimics the natural soil found in arid regions, such as deserts or savannas. Most desert soils are not solely sand-based but are a mixture of sand, decomposed granite, and clay, resulting in fascinating and sometimes colorful rock formations. The Exo Terra desert sand substrate allows you to create your own desert or savanna landscapes, including cool and moist burrows, as well as elevated and warm bathing areas. The cool and moist burrows allow your reptiles to absorb the necessary moisture through their skin while sleeping or hiding, while the elevated and warm bathing areas help your reptiles regulate their body temperature by providing important thermal gradients.

Slightly moisten the desert sand substrate to form hills, burrows, and natural bathing platforms for your animals. Once dry, the desert sand substrate will retain its shape, allowing your reptiles to continue their natural digging and burrowing behavior. You can cover the entire ground surface with the curated desert sand substrate, or create curated sections and fill the remaining space of the reptile cage with Exo Terra desert sand substrate or Exo Terra desert sand. The desert sand substrate can also be used to secure heavy decorative items, such as branches or rock formations.
