Uses: An annual formula for all medium to large parrots, especially African Greys, Cockatoos, large Conures, Eclectus, Macaws, and Pionus. Other species can be switched to the Adult Lifetime formula after a 6-month conversion period. Conversion: All birds should start and remain on the High Potency formula for at least 6 months.
Special Needs: For birds that are molting, overweight, underweight, particularly active, living in a cold climate, recovering from illness, or suffering from liver or kidney disease.
Feeding Weaned Birds: Feed the High Potency formula for at least 6-9 months. Breeding Birds: Feed birds the High Potency formula 1-2 months prior to the breeding period and until chicks are weaned or for at least six months before returning to the Adult Lifetime formula. The amount of approved organic vegetables and fruits added can be increased until chicks are weaned. For every 2 tablespoons (20 grams) of formula, add half a tablespoon (5 grams) of approved organic peanuts or almonds and a tablespoon (10 grams) of approved organic sunflower seeds.
Storage: Harrison's bird foods contain no artificial preservatives. Once opened, they should be consumed within 8 weeks. Storing food in the refrigerator or freezer helps maintain freshness.
Feeding Directions: Offer fresh food daily - do not "top off." To help reduce waste, offer as distinct meals. Birds can eat as much as they want, but use the guide below as a reference.
- Pionus: 10 - 15 grams (1 - 1.5 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, ½ - 1 teaspoon of additional foods.
- Amazon / Eclectus: 15 - 30 grams (1.5 - 3 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, 1 - 2 teaspoons of additional foods.
- African Grey: 15 - 30 grams (1.5 - 3 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, 1.5 - 2 teaspoons of additional foods.
- Cockatoo: 15 - 50 grams (1.5 - 5 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, 2 - 3 teaspoons of additional foods.
- Macaw: 20 - 50 grams (2 - 6 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, 2 - 4 teaspoons of additional foods.
- Toucan: 50 - 150 grams (5 - 15 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, 3 - 9 tablespoons of additional foods.
- Hornbill: 100 - 300 grams (10 - 30 tablespoons) of High Potency formula, 2 - 4 teaspoons of additional foods.
Supplemental Feeding: Harrison's products should make up 75-80% of your bird's diet. It is recommended that 15-20% of the diet be high-quality, preferably organic, vegetables and fruits. Dark yellow, fleshy, or dark green items like sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango, or papaya are most beneficial. It is recommended that 5% of the diet be high-quality, preferably organic items that provide a rich source of omega-3. Examples include chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, or some nuts. See this article for more information on the reasons and benefits of including these items.
Adding vitamins or supplements for birds or other animals is not recommended.
[For birds suspected of having iron storage disease: Avoid citrus fruits, tomatoes, kiwi, strawberries, and other foods containing vitamin C. Avoid grapes, raisins, liver, red meats, egg yolks, or dark green vegetables like spinach, which may contain high levels of iron.]
