Terrarium meets aquarium: The Exo Terra paludarium is a semi-aquatic habitat that embodies a rainforest, swamp, or stream, and can house both aquatic and terrestrial animal and plant species. The paludarium combines the best of both worlds: the bottom part features a very high front glass, providing a higher water level and larger water volume compared to common terrariums.

The unique root background provides additional climbing opportunities and mimics the natural environment of banyan tree roots. The increased three-dimensional living space makes it a great habitat for many arboreal species such as tree snakes and boas, day geckos, leaf-tailed geckos, tokay geckos, tree frogs, and others.

The very high front bottom glass of the Exo Terra paludarium can enable you to incorporate a large water section or aquarium section, allowing you to keep aquatic animals and plants next to the land or terrarium section. Part of the water section can consist of a false bottom to support the land section, accommodate and hide aquatic devices such as filters, pumps, and heaters, and can act as a biological filtration medium.

The word paludarium comes from the Latin word "palus" meaning swamp.

The living space of a paludarium consists of 3 distinct areas:

Terrestrial area
The terrestrial area forms a land area containing plants, trees, shrubs, and rocks that are never submerged. In tropical climates, a variety of invertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians occur here.

Area adjacent to water
The area adjacent to water or riverbanks is the interface between land and water. It is inhabited by reptiles and semi-aquatic amphibians.

Water area
A water area can be a stream, pond, or even a lake – home to turtles, aquatic amphibians, fish, and freshwater shrimp.

Water plays a vital role in the lives of all animals. It is important for regulating temperature, absorbing nutrients, removing waste, and maintaining healthy weight. Additionally, many species require the presence of water for short or long periods of time for certain life stages such as mating, laying eggs, development (larval stage), or even shedding their skin. In the wild, events like seasonal floods or heavy rains provide the essential conditions for the survival of these species. If water is unavailable for a long period, they will die or be unable to reproduce.

To create a waterfall, waterfalls, or a background irrigation system, we recommend using the Exo Terra Cascade High Performance HP180 pump and filter (not included). The Exo Terra Cascade is a high-performance submersible pump with a three-stage filtration system, specifically designed to create waterfalls or streams flowing up to a maximum height of 180 cm (70 inches). The pump's high lift allows you to create a large waterfall flowing from the top of the terrarium to the water reservoir below, or multiple waterfalls resembling a series of small cascades descending into a meandering stream at the bottom of the terrarium. The high-performance Cascade pump is also ideal for continuous irrigation of the terrarium background, creating an ideal environment for all types of mosses, ferns, vines, orchids, and air plants. The low-voltage Exo Terra Cascade pump ensures safety when used in a humid environment.

Direct water from the filter pump through your terrarium along a background planted with live plants and mosses or by creating waterfalls that gradually return the water to the water reservoir. Waterfalls add aesthetic appeal and help oxygenate and biologically filter the water. Live plants and mosses will contribute to the filtration capabilities of your terrarium. This type of setup allows for the creation of an efficient filtration system, mirroring the natural biological filtration process. A fully functioning paludarium will provide a continuous source of clean water, which is essential for maintaining semi-aquatic species. It is essentially a small closed ecosystem.

The front doors can be opened separately to reduce the risk of escape while allowing easy access for maintenance and feeding. A specially designed lock prevents animals from accidentally opening the doors. The full-screen top ventilation allows UVB and infrared penetration and can be completely removed for easy access during decorating or cleaning. At the back of the screen cover, there are 5 closable inlets for wires or tubes on both sides for mounting waterfalls, pumps, aquarium heaters, sensors, etc., inside the terrarium.

A fully equipped and functional paludarium is essentially a small closed ecosystem.
Use Biotize to accelerate biological filtration capabilities and have your active ecosystem ready in no time.

Various species of reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and plants can be accommodated in the Exo Terra paludarium. Stream-dwelling species like small turtles, basilisks, water dragons, anoles, newts, tree frogs, dart frogs, and small fish species will thrive in the paludarium. Other species that can be accommodated in the paludarium include mudskippers, freshwater or saltwater crabs, shrimp, and snails.

Conduct regular water tests to check water quality and filter efficiency. Partial water changes can help remove toxins or generally improve water quality. Unless absolutely necessary, ensure not to perform complete water changes, as this will also remove beneficial bacteria and organisms.

Set up a paludarium and enjoy a stunning rainforest scene in your living room!

Ideal for arboreal reptiles and amphibians, and taller live plants. This rainforest terrarium is a perfect habitat for vertical or tree-dwelling species, stimulating natural vertical movement.
