Tests whether the dog is positive or negative for the DEA 1.1 red blood cell antigen.
Dogs that are positive for the DEA 1.1 antigen are considered universal recipients, meaning they can receive both positive and negative DEA antigen blood without a reaction during transfusion.
Dogs that are negative for the DEA 1.1 antigen are considered universal donors. DEA 1.1 positive blood should not be used for transfusion to DEA 1.1 negative dogs.
If this is the recipient's first blood transfusion, the red blood cells will have a shorter lifespan, and the dog will become sensitized to the DEA 1.1 antigen in the future.
If the dog has previously received DEA 1.1 positive blood, a life-threatening reaction will occur within a few hours.
