Silk is a non-absorbable, sterile surgical suture material composed of the organic protein fibroin. This protein is produced by the domesticated species Bombyx mori (B. mori) of the Bombycidae family.

Silk material is generally used for the approximation or ligation of soft tissues, for example, in cardiovascular, neurological, or ophthalmic surgeries.

The use of this material is contraindicated in individuals with a known sensitivity or allergy to silk. Due to the gradual loss of tensile strength in the body, the use of silk surgical sutures should be avoided if this loss is undesirable.

Undesirable reactions to this medical device include: wound dehiscence, gradual loss of tensile strength, allergic reactions in individuals with known silk sensitivity, stone formation in the urinary and biliary tracts after prolonged contact with saline fluids such as urine or bile, wound infection, acute inflammatory reactions, and temporary local irritation.

Silk sutures are non-absorbable; however, gradual degradation of the protein-containing silk fibers in the body can occur, leading to a gradual loss of tensile strength.
