Gum is part of the natural diet of many primate species. Bushbaby monkeys have 35-75% gum in their diet, in addition to animal prey and fruits. The diet of the fork-marked lemur mainly consists of gum, along with fruits, sap, and animal matter (10%). Other species that include gum in their diet are marmosets, which have 5-16% gum, alongside insects and fruits. Tamarins have 9% gum in their natural diet, but the bulk of their diet consists of fruits and insects. Key features:
  • Natural gum (also known as acacia gum) is extracted from two types of acacia trees in the sub-Saharan region, Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal.
