Nitrifying bacteria convert harmful ammonia into nitrate. This is known as the nitrogen cycle and occurs naturally in all aquatic environments. Your fish will produce waste, which feeds the growth of beneficial bacteria that will form your "biological filter." These bacteria continue to grow as your aquarium ages—living in the upper layers of the aquarium sand or in filter media such as API BIO-CHEM STARS biological media.
They are formed under a patented production process that creates an internal pore network sized 50-70 microns. This size is optimal for the growth of beneficial and nitrifying bacteria that remove toxic ammonia and nitrite.
