The Exo Terra Bamboo Forest Floor is a multi-layered substrate that allows you to recreate the forest floor as found in natural bamboo forests.
The forest floor is considered one of the most distinctive features of the Bamboo Forest ecosystem. It usually consists of two main layers;
1. The top layer mainly consists of fresh foliage
2. The base layer consists of rich organic material – typically decomposed leaves and wood
The top layer consists of sun-dried decorative bamboo leaves from a sustainable source. With this decorative top layer, you can truly create a soft ground cover as found in natural bamboo forests. Bamboo leaves provide a soft layer for animals to dig and cover their secret hideouts. Most reptiles and amphibians forage on the forest floor in search of food and water. The top layer covers the actual substrate below to facilitate moisture retention and prevent soil drying. These biodegradable bamboo leaves are completely chemical-free and can be safely composted in your garden.
The base layer consists of a rich organic material made from sustainable coconut husk fibers. It is a 100% natural, eco-friendly, and biodegradable substrate with excellent moisture absorption properties. This base layer makes it easy to create natural terrarium setups for moisture-loving plants, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Its water retention properties, natural root hormones, and antifungal properties enhance plant growth in your terrarium. The coconut material used in the Exo Terra Bamboo Forest Floor consists of a mix of short fibers and coconut husk granule sizes ranging from coarse granules to fine chunks, improving soil drainage and aeration for healthy plant roots.
The top layer of bamboo leaves slightly retains the moisture of the base layer, facilitating maintenance by acting as a natural ecosystem where beneficial organisms decompose waste products, thus reducing odors.
The Exo Terra Bamboo Forest Floor has been heat-treated to reduce bacterial contamination.
Usage Instructions:
Spread 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) of the base layer on the terrarium floor. Spray or water the substrate according to the desired humidity level. Place your decorative items in the terrarium, then cover the ground with the top layer of decorative bamboo leaves. Use the Exo Terra hygrometer to monitor the level. To increase air humidity in well-ventilated terrariums or those requiring very high humidity, place an Exo Terra substrate heater under the terrarium. Clean the bedding periodically daily, and replace it entirely with new bedding when needed.
