SUBSTRATpro is composed of glass arranged in a pearly shape. The spherical shape provides high volumetric density. Thus, the full volume in the filter (filter baskets or units) can be utilized. Additionally, the optimal surface of the balls provides intensive colonization by bacteria important for purification.
Thanks to the large number of bacteria, maximum nitrite loads are reduced more easily, and the maintenance intervals for the filter material are longer.

The main task of biological filter media is to provide the best colonization conditions for bacterial cultures, so that a bacterial lawn develops after a short period. Bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kinds and convert critical substances for the aquatic environment.
After the first cleaning process with mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration is most important. It provides clear, healthy water and stable water values. That is why we have invested a lot of research work in developing biological filter media.
Tip:
Never clean or change all filter media at once in a single operation (and do not clean too vigorously). Bacterial cultures should not be completely destroyed, otherwise recolonization will be delayed. Filter baskets in external filters and filter units in internal filters like aquaball and biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.
