Benefits

Oral and dental health care for pets is very important. They are unable to tell us when they are in pain, so regularly checking their gums and teeth is important. Chewing Zeal® pet treats will help remove plaque and tartar. It is also good to regularly brush your pet's teeth!

Treats for use in training sessions: Treats are a useful tool in the training process as they help keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of age. For training purposes, treats should be small and easy to swallow, requiring little chewing so you can reward behaviors quickly and often. Ideal training treats are relatively soft and pea-sized. Pets do not care much about the size of the treat, but the quantity is what impresses them. Larger treats are suitable for rewarding good behavior, like large pieces, where your pet has to stop, chew, and take their time eating them.

How to use dog treats more effectively: The most effective way to use treats is to reinforce a calm and submissive state. Never use treats to reward an excited or overly stimulated mental state. Let your pet sniff the treat first, but hold it away from them and wait. Remember that pets, especially dogs, can smell from over 5 meters away, so you do not have to place the treat under their nose. Once they catch the Scent, dogs may initially jump and leap on you. If this happens, indicate your disapproval through your behavior and body language, as your patience as an owner will pay off in a well-behaved pet. They will understand that a calm approach gets results, and they will sit waiting for you in a calm manner. At the moment of calmness, offer them the treat. Do not use treats to reinforce an excited pet, but to guide the calm and submissive state.

Feeding Guidelines

Do not overindulge in treats ~ Although it may be tempting when your furry partner begs for more, do not be too generous and keep treats under control. Treats are meant to complement your pet's diet. As with us, excessive treats can cause weight gain and also disrupt the balance in your pet's diet, which should be complete and balanced to maintain their health. Treats should not exceed 10% of the daily required calories for your pet, so regular meal portions should be reduced to avoid weight gain, considering what they have consumed in treats during training sessions in the day. This also applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. If you do not, your pet's weight will slowly increase, and the extra kilograms above the ideal will be harmful to your pet's health.

Treat wisely ~ We always recommend that your pet consumes treats under supervision, especially when trying a new treat. Some dogs (uncommon in cats) are overly enthusiastic when it comes to tasty pieces and may not chew properly, which could lead to choking.

When to give your pet treats ~ The ideal time to give treats is between meals, not immediately before or after a meal. Choose a treat your pet will enjoy. If you are using treats as a training tool, your treat will not work well after your pet has had a full meal.

What type of treats are suitable for your dog or cat's breed, size, and age?
We recommend that your pet consumes treats under supervision, especially when trying a new treat. Many dogs tend to consume the treat without even chewing, so monitor all sizes and ages to ensure they can manage it without choking incidents. Cats usually chew the treat without trying to consume it in seconds. Small dogs may find large bones and such a bit too big, and large dogs may try to swallow medium-sized hard treats without chewing. Older pets with dental Disorders will need a softer chew, so it is up to you to assess your pet's size and eating behaviors.
