Benefits

Oral and dental health for your pet is very important. They are unable to tell us when they are in pain, so regularly checking their gums and teeth is essential. Chewing on Zeal® rewards will help remove plaque and tartar. It's also good to brush your pet's teeth regularly!

Rewards for use in training sessions: Rewards are a useful tool in the training process as they help focus your pet on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. Rewards should mostly be small and easy to swallow, requiring little chewing so you can reward behaviors quickly and frequently. Ideal training rewards are relatively soft and pea-sized. Pets don't care much about the size of the reward, but the quantity is what impresses them. Larger rewards are more suitable for rewarding good behavior, like large pieces, where your pet has to stop, chew, and take time to consume them.

How to use dog rewards more effectively: The most effective way to use rewards is to reinforce a calm and peaceful state. Never use rewards to reward a state of excitement or over-stimulation. Let your pet smell the reward first, but hold it away from them and wait. Remember that pets, especially dogs, can smell from over 5 meters away, so you don't have to place the reward under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may initially jump, and even jump on you. If this happens, indicate your dissatisfaction with your behavior and body language, and your patience as an owner will yield a well-behaved pet. They will understand that the calm way achieves results, as they sit and wait while watching you with quiet anticipation. In the moment of calm, offer them the reward. Do not use rewards to reinforce an overly excited pet, but to guide the calm and peaceful state.

Feeding Guidelines

Do not over-reward ~ Although it may be tempting when your pet begs for more, do not be too generous and ensure to regulate the offering of rewards. Rewards are meant to complement your pet's diet. As with us, over-rewarding can lead to weight gain, and it will disrupt the balance in your pet's diet, which should be complete and balanced to keep them healthy. Ideally, rewards should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric needs, so regular meal portions should be reduced to avoid weight gain, considering what they consumed in rewards during training sessions in one day. This also applies to rewards given as general rewards for good behavior. If you do not do this, your pet will slowly gain weight, and excess weight above the ideal level is harmful to your pet's health.

Regarding rewards ~ We always recommend that your pet consumes rewards under supervision, especially when trying a new reward. Some dogs (which is uncommon in cats) are very "enthusiastic" when it comes to delicious rewards and may not chew properly, which could lead to a potential choking situation.

When to give your pet rewards ~ The ideal time to offer rewards is between meals, not immediately before or after a meal. Choose a reward your pet enjoys. If you are using rewards as a training tool, your reward will not work well after your pet has had a full meal.

What types of rewards are suitable for your dog's or cat's breed, size, and age?
We recommend that your pet consumes rewards under supervision, especially when trying a new reward. Many dogs tend to consume the reward quickly without even chewing, so monitor all sizes and ages to ensure they can handle them without choking incidents. Cats usually chew the reward without trying to consume it in seconds. Small dogs may find shank bones and the like a bit large, and large dogs may try to swallow smaller rewards without chewing, while older pets with dental Disorders need softer chews, so it requires judgment on your pet's size and eating behaviors.
