Gum is part of the natural diet of many primate species. Bush babies contain 35-75% gum in their diet, along with animal prey and fruit. The diet of the pronghorn lemur contains mainly mucilage as well as fruit, sap and animal matter (10%). Other species that contain mucilage in their diet are marmosets, which contain 5-16% mucilage along with insects and fruits. The tamarin contains 9% mucilage in its natural diet, but the bulk of its diet consists of fruit and insects.
